I know I sound like a broken record saying this, but I’m seriously busy these days (as if that wasn’t obvious enough from my inconsistent posting schedule!). My limited time doesn’t allow for an extensive beauty regime, so I’m always on the lookout for great multitasking products. My holy grail foundation would be one that provides natural-looking coverage, a matte finish, and is long wearing.
I was recently offered the opportunity to trial the new Maybeline SuperStay Better Skin Foundation and Concealer. The foundation claims to provide flawless all-day coverage, and is Maybelline’s first foundation featuring their new Actyl-C formula, which is responsible for visibly improved skin in 3 weeks. If that doesn’t sound like a HG multitasker, I don’t know what does! Does it live up to its claims?
The Maybelline SuperStay Better Skin Foundation comes in 8 shades, and provides SPF 14 sun protection, which is always a welcome feature. I’ve always found my half-Asian skin tricky to match, and unfortunately this product comes in a slightly limited shade range for my skin tone. They’re a bit too pink toned for my skin, but I managed to achieve a pretty good match by mixing 010 Ivory and 030 Sand in a 2:1 ratio.
Let’s address the first criteria: flawless coverage. I give this foundation a big tick in that department. It only takes a small amount to cover my entire face and neck with a lightweight, matte finish that evens out my skin’s uneven tone and redness.
For the one or two more stubborn blemishes, I used the Maybelline SuperStay Better Skin Concealer in 02 Light (it only comes in 2 shades – the other is 03 medium). It covers well and blends easily.
What about lasting power? Without a mattifying powder, it lasted about 6 hours before becoming shiny; with powder, 10 hours. That’s pretty damn good. The coverage did inevitably fade by the end of my typical 15-hour workday, but it meets my standard for long-wearing foundations.
I also appreciated how quick and easy it was to remove at the end of the day when I was ready to roll straight into bed at 2am.
Coming to the Actyl-C formula which claims to hydrate and improve skin tone, , I do have pretty good skin, and only suffer from the occasional hormonal pimple (which no skincare product can do anything about!) and mild redness, therefore I didn’t notice a huge visible change in my skin’s tone or texture throughout the 3 weeks I wore this foundation. Throughout the entire trial period I was working long days and nights in the theatre and getting very little sleep, so it’s already a miracle my skin wasn’t a complete disaster by the end of it. Now that I have a bit of a break before the next show, I’m looking forward to wearing this foundation more and possibly seeing further results.
